Breaking: AI Replaces over 4000 workers in Singapore

Image
Singapore's biggest bank, DBS, says it expects to cut about 4,000 roles over the next three years as artificial intelligence (AI) takes on more work currently done by humans. The move will affect temporary and contract staff, a bank spokesperson said, with the reduction in the workforce coming from "natural attrition" as projects are completed. Permanent staff are not affected by the cuts. The bank's outgoing chief executive Piyush Gupta also said it expected to create around 1,000 new AI-related jobs. It makes DBS one of the first major banks to offer details on how AI will affect its operations. The company did not say how many jobs would be cut in Singapore. "Over the next three years, we envisage that AI could reduce the need to renew about 4,000 temporary/contract staff across our 19 markets working on specific projects," the DBS spokesperson said. "As such, we expect the reduction in workforce will come from natural attrition as these temporary ...

BREAKING: Sudan is in big trouble

Image
The freezing of US humanitarian assistance has forced the closure of almost 80% of the emergency food kitchens set up to help people left destitute by Sudan's civil war, the BBC has learned. Aid volunteers said the impact of President Donald Trump's executive order halting contributions from the US government's development organisation (USAID) for 90 days meant more than 1,100 communal kitchens had shut. It is estimated that nearly two million people struggling to survive have been affected. The conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has killed tens of thousands of people, forced millions from their homes and left many facing famine since it erupted in April 2023. The kitchens are run by groups known as emergency response rooms, a grassroots network of activists who stayed on the frontlines to respond to the crises in their neighbourhoods. "People are knocking on the volunteers' doors," says Duaa Tariq, one of the emergency room ...

Pope Francis Remains 'Critical' and has Kidney Problems

Image
Pope Francis remains in a "critical" condition, but "has not presented any further respiratory crises", the Vatican said in a statement on Sunday. He was still receiving high-flow oxygen therapy and had undergone blood transfusions. Blood tests also showed he had "initial, mild, renal insufficiency" - a kidney problem - that is "currently under control", the statement said. The Vatican said he "continues to be alert and well oriented". The Pope was admitted to Rome's Gemelli Hospital on 14 February after experiencing breathing difficulties for several days, where he was first treated for bronchitis before being diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs. On Sunday, the Pope's thrombocytopenia - a condition that occurs when the platelet count in the blood is too low - was stable, the statement said. In the morning, the Pope "participated in the Holy Mass, together with those who are taking care of him during these days", ...

KNUST DEVELOPS LOCALLY MADE MACHINE TO TEST STRENGTH OF MATERIALS

Image
K  The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has developed a locally-made machine designed to test the strength of various materials. The high-precision material testing machine, named TechStress TS-50, was designed by researchers from the Mechanical Engineering Department of the university. This innovation aims to eliminate the need for importing foreign-made machines for testing materials such as fibres, metals, and plastics. Background and development The lead scientist, Prof. Yesuenyeagbe Fiagbe, told GraphicOnline in a telephone interview that the project was inspired by the need to study the properties of fibres in Ghana. "Initially, the team thought about buying a testing machine, but they realised they had the knowledge to build one locally. This led to the creation of a highly accurate, flexible testing machine that can be used in various industries," he explained. He added that “this machine can test not only fibres but also metals and plastics,...

Judge's sperm donor warning over man who 'fathered 180 children'

Image
A sperm donor who claims to have fathered more than 180 children has been used by a judge to warn of the dangers of unregulated sperm donation. Robert Charles Albon, who calls himself Joe Donor, claims to have fathered children all over the world from China to Australia after advertising online. But using him as a donor turned into a "horror story" for a couple after he took them to court as he wanted parental rights over their child. The BBC has approached Mr Albon for a response. It is extremely rare for a parent in a family court case about children to be publicly identified but the family court judge said it was in the public interest in naming Mr Albon. In his judgement, Jonathan Furness KC said he wanted to protect women from the possible consequences of unregulated sperm donorship and from using Mr Albon. The baby in this case was conceived by syringe injection to a same-sex couple, although Mr Albon claimed to have had secret sex with the biological mother in the ba...
